Thin film evolution equations are derived in long wave approximation from the Navier-Stokes equations incorporating different disjoining pressures to investigate film rupture mechanisms, hole growth and coarsening. We especially established the distinction of nucleation-dominated and instability-dominated sub-ranges within the linear unstable film thickness range and the occurence of satellite holes in the nucleation-dominated sub-range. For heterogeneous substrates we focused on a description based on bifurcation theory of the hysteretic transition between ongoing coarsening and ideal pinning for increasing strength of the wettability pattern. Also the influence of a very weak heterogeneity and of stochastic noise on the coarsening dynamics was studied.
